Arrival and Play Time
Players should be in their right gym by 11:45am. The tournament will run from 12pm to 5pm.
The gym each division plays in will be determined after the number of teams in each division is known. Captains will be notified and should notify their team members. The first 2-3 hours will be round-robin play, then there will be a single-elimination tournament. Game times may be adjusted to finish by 5pm.
Basketball Tournament Rules
- Time limits: Someone on either team shoots a 3-point shot. If it goes in, that team gets the ball first. Games will be approximately 11 minutes long with a running clock. Whoever is ahead when time is up wins. If the score is tied, keep playing until someone scores. Teams do not have to win by 2. There will be no time-outs.
- Scoring: A 3-pointer is worth 2 points, and any other shot is worth 1 point. Depending on the gym, the 11 & under and 14 & under divisions may have every basket count as 1 point if there is no 3-point line. If someone is fouled on a shot, it counts as a point. The game cannot end on a foul on the shot unless it is obvious and the defense calls it. In fairness, a team should never stall at the end of a game. After each game, the winning team reports wins and losses to the official's table.
- Fouls: Offense and defense call fouls. If you foul someone, call it. If you get fouled and they do not call it, call it. Calls are not made by others on the team or fans. If someone calls a foul, there is no argument. Give them the ball and keep playing. If a gym official totally does not agree, the official may override a call or call a jump ball for change of possession.
- Refs and officials: There will be no refs at most games. A gym official may be consulted if there is a major controversy. We hope the official does not have to interfere, but they will be there to resolve major disputes. There may be refs for the last few games of the single-elimination tournament.
- Intensity levels: We want good, clean, enjoyable basketball. Officials and helpers are donating their time. If, in their judgment, someone is guilty of a flagrant foul, inappropriate yelling, vulgar language, or similar behavior, that player may be asked to sit for an appropriate amount of time. Any action deemed excessively flagrant, such as throwing a punch, means the player is ejected for the rest of the game or the rest of the tournament. If a team does not control a player who is out of control, the whole team may be removed from the tournament. That decision will be made by the gym officials.
- Substitutions: A player can substitute when their team is on defense, preferably during a dead ball.
- Sportsmanship: We expect everyone to act appropriately: no swearing, trash-talking, intentionally fouling, or similar behavior. Encourage teammates to call fouls when they commit them or when they feel they were fouled. Help control your own teammates and play for the love of the game. Respect each other and the officials who are helping everyone enjoy the tournament.
