Volleyball Tournament Rules

  1. Players on court: It is 6 on 6, but there must be 3 females on the court at all times. A team may play with only 4 or 5 players, but there still must be 3 females on the court. At least one touch over the net must be made by a female during each rally that has at least two touches.
  2. Time: Each match is one game lasting about 12-13 minutes with a running clock. Whoever is ahead when time is up wins, and teams only need to win by 1. If the score is tied, play one more point to determine the winner. Do not stop the game for a controversy. Quickly re-serve.
  3. Scoring: Rally scoring is used, meaning a point is scored on every serve. The server should yell out the score before serving so there is no misunderstanding. At the end of the game, the winning team reports who won to the scorer table.
  4. Substitution: Substitutions should be done quickly and during a dead ball. Players do not have to sub in, but when they do, it needs to be orderly.
  5. Type of tournament: There will be round-robin play for approximately 3 hours, then a single-elimination tournament. Everyone should get plenty of games.
  6. Officials: There will be supervisors in the gym, but they will not be calling lines, net violations, or similar calls. Teams will be on the honor system. This includes hitting the net, line violations, obvious carries, and similar violations. These violations can only be called by the team that hit the net or is closest to the line. If that team does not call it, keep playing. If there is a disagreement on a critical point, re-serve.
